DAYCARE CENTRE

AIRDRIE

for
NORTH LANARKSHIRE COUNCIL SOCIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT
The Adult Daycare Centre, designed for North Lanarkshire Council in Airdrie, seeks to combine a therapeutic environment for the elderly experiencing memory loss problems, an NHS Outpatients clinic specializing in treatment of these issues, and a Common Room for the use of residents in the extensive Sheltered Housing surrounding the new building. The building is designed as a sun trap overlooking south west facing gardens, which were created as part of the project. All of the main spaces overlook the gardens, opening onto a secure terrace and lawns, sheltered by glazed canopies that evoke memories of old Airdrie. Clerestory lighting is employed to bring daylight into every part of the building, aiming to give a sense of relief and remove any feeling of being trapped or institutionalised.
