LIBRARY OVERCLADDING

UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW
We were given the challenge to solve the range of serious technical problems with the failing concrete cladding of this distinctive Modernist building, designed in 1968 by Sir William Whitfield. It was also our desire to give the building a style and relevance in the 21st century without losing the essential qualities of its design, and to better fit the building within one of the most sensitive conservation areas in Glasgow. An aluminium overcladding system was used in a range of honest metallic shades based on the functions of each of the towers; the entrance was given greater prominence, and historic ad hoc additions were organized and relocated to create a clean striking appearance that exploits, rather than hides, the original architectural concept.
